After reading other books pertaining to the earliest Christian communities and Acts in particular, I think this work is a good starting place for critical readers of the New Testament who have lingering questions regarding the descrepancy between Paul's letters, Acts, and the Gospels.
The solutions and judgements regarding these differences make use of sometimes overlooked details in scripture itself, along with the latest understanding of the social world of the New Testament. The narrative chronological format kept my interest until the end and is another reason I think this is a good starting place for understanding the New Testament. One person found this helpful. A friend recommended the book and I'm glad he did. It provides an insightful context of contemporary politics that gives a clearer understanding of Jesus and his followers calling for a radical change from values imposed by an expanding empire.
It changes my perspective about Jesus as a person and as a model for a movement. Helps understand the times and customs of Biblical times. I found it interesting reading. Recommend it for those teaching Adult Sunday School classes too. Some of us who inhabit the world of the church distinguish between "Jesus Christians" frequently Roman Catholics, people in "just peace" churches, other activist Jesus emulators , who follow the Jesus of the synoptic gospels and the Didache, and "Pauline Christians" usually stereotyped as Protestants in church bodies of continental European Reformation heritage , who love to theologize the Pauline and deutero-Pauline epistles.
They caution us popular assumptions and shorthands aren't always so! We don't need another proof-text The most important rituals of every Christian's life--baptism, Lord's Supper, and collections--seemed to gird the assemblies scattered through the eastern Mediterranean The Message and the Kingdom is solidly scholarly, yet reads like listening to an interesting lecture series that respects those with an academic bent, doesn't confuse or demean those without. I love the multicolored perspectives woven through the chapters!
This book works well for both groups, and though neither the ecclesiastical nor the spiritual dominates the book, Silberman and Horsley don't exclude them, either! End matter includes narrative bibliographical notes on each chapter, a big bibliography, and an index.
The Message and the Kingdom: How Jesus & Paul Ignited a Revolution & Transformed the Ancient World
Professor Horsley has repeatedly offered us books impeccably researched and annotated in great detail. Yet despite the promise of those works, Horsley has too often hidden his gifts behind an impenetrable wall of technicalities and minutia. In his attempts to demonstrate his intelligence, Horsley has sometimes made his writing obtuse and inaccessible to the average reader. This, however, is not one of his failures.
Here Horsley finally gets it right. Here Horsley fulfills the promise of his other works. Examining the politics, sociology, psychology and religion of the renewal movements founded by John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth, and Paul of Tarsus, Horsley and Silberman weave an exhilarating narrative that exposes the historical roots of Christianity.
