National Service, by Colin Shindler | The Spectator

Colin Schinler's summaries and introductions clearly explained the periods in our more recent history. I did National Service from This book tells much of it as it was. To my surprise though, many of those whose stories are related in this book were bored and felt it was a waste of time. Have to say I seem to have been lucky and enjoyed it. I certainly grew up fast. At first I read the book expecting tales of rough sorts coping with the rigours of basic training and crazed NCO's along with unpleasant encounters with foreign types.

In fact when I reached the end I thought A few stories of Ox-bridge chaps and a few other ranks fodder, muttering about rather uneventful enforced periods in the Service of Her Majesty. In fact I went back to the start and read it again to see what I had missed.

Aden khormaksar was an eye opener for a naive 18 yearold, but I survived it, and look back with fond memories of there and the route stations, Riyan, Salalah, Masirah, Sharjah and Bahrain.

My own memoirs will fill in gaps for my family when I pass on!

This was bought for my dad who has thoroughly enjoyed reading it. He just missed out on National Service but it envoked long forgotten memories of that era. It has been now been passed on to other family members for them to hopefully enjoy as much as he did. Good value for money and would definitely recommend. See all reviews.
