Franceso Petrarch , creator of the sonnet form, remained for more than three hundred years the most influential poet in Europe, his works more widely read than even those of Dante. This collection contains English language versions of his poems from across six centuries, in a wide variety of translations and reinterpretations.

Spanning the Trionfi series and the Franceso Petrarch , creator of the sonnet form, remained for more than three hundred years the most influential poet in Europe, his works more widely read than even those of Dante. Petrarch in English

May 17, David Withun rated it really liked it Shelves: I'll be honest upfront and admit that I am no fan of Petrarch's poetry. I don't much enjoy love poetry in the first place and Petrarch's obsession with Laura puts enjoyment of his poetry off even a bit further than it would already be. This isn't a literary or aesthetic judgment; it is merely a matter of taste. With that said, I enjoyed this volume for its historical and cultural value. The editor presents translations of Petrarch's poetry into English that span from Chaucer to the 20th century, exhibiting the influence that Petrarch has had as well as the more recent reactions to Petrarch that move in a bit of a counter direction. This volume is valuable to any student of poetry in English. I am new to Petrarch, but his poems about love, loss, god, and the transience of life are very moving and beautiful.

I love the more modern translations.
