First situating it in its biblical context as part of Jesus's conversation with Nicodemus, Lucado then dissects the word promise phrase by phrase, picking out key theological ideas that provide hope to Christians. What does it mean that God "so loved the world"- What must we do to gain everlasting life- Using his trademark folksy style, Lucado employs great stories and real-life illustrations to drive home points about God's love, justice and determination to save.

The chapter on hell pinging off the phrase "shall not perish" is alone worth the price of admission; it's uncharacteristically hard-hitting for Lucado, with the beloved pastor drawing a line in the sand for evangelicals who might be tempted to believe in universal salvation or who imagine hell as a mere metaphor. That chapter, in fact, could and should be further developed in a book of its own. Some of Lucado's points in this book are devastatingly insightful, others only gimmicky or superficial; still, the book is an excellent entry into the popular Texas writer's body of work.

It's short, marvelously accessible and followed by a day Bible study on the life of Jesus excerpted from Lucado's prior books. He is the author of multiple bestsellers and is America's leading inspirational author. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? I have purchased several Max Lucado books and children's videos in the past few years and I am never disappointed in my purchases.

This is an all inspiring look into one of the most quoted scriptures in the Bible. I loved the way Max Lucado wrote this book and brought this scripture to life in a new way for me. Since my first purchase I have since ordered 25 more copies. These will make wonderful gifts or testimonial hand outs. The cost is very reasonable because the Word of God is priceless. Jesus died on the cross as payment for the sins of mankind. The act of martyrdom is not uncommon, but Jesus was.

The world is abundant with evidence that Jesus wasn't just another martyr - he moved people beyond this world. That is a fantastic contribution to the human race. Without hope, what do we have to look forward to. With hope, beyond material desires, we realize we are more than human. Even famed astrophysicist Neil deGrass Tyson shares an appreciation for God in the statement that while others see humans as being only a small particle of dust in vast universe, the real truth is that throughout the entire universe, the fundamental make-up organic matter of what we are at the subatomic level, is at ONE with the ENTIRE universe.

Dyer said it another way, that if you believe you originated from a Creator such as God, then you are part-God. Rather than humans that have spiritual experiences, think of yourself as a spirit having human experiences. I've heard Max Lucado is good, but never read his books.

I felt bad giving a book to someone when I have no clue if it's even good, encouraging, or for the intended audience, so I decided to read it. Anyways, I'll admit, I don't read much I know I should read more. I read this page book in one sitti I'm actually reviewing the "Teen Edition". I read this page book in one sitting! It's simple, short, easy read. It goes in detail, one of the greatest verses in the Bible, a verse most of us church-goers have memorized growing up. Max does a great job explaining each segment of the verse, and especially with painting the picture of heaven.

It also gives a sort of commentary of 2 "typical" teenagers. The thoughts and prayers of a 16 year old boy from a divorced family, and a 17 year old perfect grew-up in a Christian household girl. Most can relate to either or even both. I don't want to give away too much of the book, but I think we found a winner for the guy!!

Oct 15, Ericka Clouther rated it liked it Shelves: This book is helpful if you don't know the basic premise of Evangelical Christianity. If you're already an Evangelical, you will probably enjoy this book like a warm hug or comfort food. If you don't fit either of those categories this book probably won't enlighten or persuade you even if you're looking to be persuaded as there isn't much substance to it.

This is the first Max Lucado book I have read. Although I am a Christian, I tend to shy away from books that for whatever reason, I perceive to be the equivalent of "pop psychology" of the Christian world- i. Whether that is an accurate perception or not, I've lumped Lucado in that category. I was pleasantly Much better than I expected. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It dissects John 3: This might be a good book for seekers or new believers.

It's scriptural, yet not overly preachy or intimidating. It's serious, yet Lucado adds enough levity and real-world analogy to be accessible and palatable to a wide audience. May 23, David rated it it was amazing Shelves: I've never heard Max Lucado preach. But if he preaches half as good as he writes, he must be truly blessed by God.

Lucado's writing brings God's word to life. Not only does he help grasp the meaning of the bible, he has a way of making you see it as if you were experiencing it firsthand! The Numbers of Hope , Lucado takes the most well-known scripture in the bible and breaks it down piece by piece showing how powerfully deep this seemingly simple verse truly is.

It's God's plan for mankind in a nutshell! Aug 04, Todd rated it liked it Shelves: So I am not the evangelical, conservative religious type. That doesn't stop me from liking Max Lucado. Max presents the God we would all like to believe in - a God of love, mercy and forgiveness.

Sep 25, LemonLinda rated it really liked it. Lucado takes probably the most memorized and one of my favorite Bible verses and breaks it down into just what this verse means for our lives. He has a refreshing, modern way of using anecdotes to reinforce his message. Then in the second half of the book he includes forth daily inspiring mini-stories many of which I marked for emphasis to reread. What a perspective on such a short verse!
