Once there, Sholto uses his guards to track her down. However the hags Sholto's guards and lovers attempt to kill Merry. Once Sholto convinces Merry to accompany him to his hotel room. They agree to form an alliance which was to be consecrated by Merry having sex with Sholto. They are interrupted by Nerys The Gray who attempts to kill Merry. However, Merry comes into her first hand of power the Hand of Flesh due to her "shining" moment with Sholto and uses her newly found hand of power on Nerys.

She is eventually convinced to kill Nerys with Doyle's killing blade by Doyle and Sholto, because Nerys is immortal and cannot die even if she is turned into an inside-out ball of flesh. The second alliance is formed between Merry and Kurag, King of the Goblins. This occurs when Merry is bled by the roses that line the entrance to the throne room of the Unseelie Court.

She passes out from blood loss and opens her eyes to see one of the goblins drinking from her open wound, to goblins bodily fluids are sacred. She has the goblin detained and bargains with Kurag for a 6-month alliance in return for Merry taking a goblin Kitto into her bed.

She deems this acceptable payment for the theft of her blood. Later Merry bargains for an extended alliance of 1 month for each sidhe-sided goblin that she brings into power. Also, Merry brings the Red Caps back to their full original power because she is the only Sidhe who possesses the full Hand of Blood. By doing so, the Red Caps owe her their own alliance outside of the one formed between Merry and Kurag.

This is struck when Merry bargains for the cure to a curse that the Demi-Fey placed on Galen, under the direction of Cel. She bargains with Niceven for a year alliance during which the demi-fey will spy for Merry in exchange for weekly blood donations by Merry. This alliance is brought into question later on when Queen Niceven's surrogate, who can become nearly human sized, has sex with Meredith and becomes stuck in his form at the same time, Meredith brings Nicca, one of her lovers, the wings that he should have been born with but instead had become a supernatural tattoo on his back because of this, Queen Niceven sends to Meredith the Demi-Fey that were born without wings in hopes that she will also give them their wings.

These six, therefore, will become her kings if and when she ever takes the throne. She has as of Swallowing Darkness been specifically crowned by Faerie as Sholto's queen as well as Doyle's queen; however, she has made it quite clear that this does not mean she is bound to have either of them as her only king. She has also had metaphysical sex with Barinthus formerly Manannan Mac Lir. In A Shiver of Light , it is in fact revealed to Merry's surprise that she is in fact having triplets, one of her babes was hiding behind her siblings in the womb. Near the end of the same book, Merry was crowned Queen of the Unseelie Court the Crown of Moonlight and Shadows and Doyle was crowned her king with the Crown of Thorn and Silver ; however, when offered a chance by the Goddess, they gave up the Unseelie throne in exchange for Frost's life.

She has also been offered the Seelie throne by certain members of the Seelie court, as their infertile king has gone mad and is no longer fit to rule, but has refused. Merry repeatedly states, both in her own thoughts and to her guards, that she does not believe she would be accepted on either the Seelie or Unseelie thrones because of her mortality and mixed human, brownie, and sidhe blood, and that she would invite certain death for either herself or some of her men by attempting to rule either court.

She is surprised that the Sluagh remain loyal to her and refuse to elect another king till Sholto is avenged. At the end of the book she still remains Queen of the Sluagh, as well as claiming the title of the Queen of Faerie in the westerlands with approval of the Goddess and Consort. Branwyn's Tears temporarily turns any creature into a sidhe and forces them to crave sexual intercourse.

Sexual intercourse is one of a few fae rituals which can raise power and activate personal magics. When Merry had intercourse with her boyfriend, who was a roane, she simultaneously returned his ability to change shape which he had lost after a fisherman burned his seal-skin and raised magic in her two hands indicating she possesses two hands of power. And as I lock my half-mortal body with their full-Sidhe blooded ones, the power surges like never before.

It all began with the chalice. I dreamed of it, and it appeared, cool and hard, beside me when I awoke. My guards know the ancient relic well--its disappearance ages ago stripped them of their vital powers. But it is here with us now. My touch resonates with its force, and they're consumed with it, their Sidhe essences lit up by it.

But even as they cherish me for this unexpected gift, there are those who loathe me for it. Me, a mongrel, only half fey and part mortal. The Unseelie court has suffered for so long, and there are some who would not have it weakened further by an impure queen.

My enemies grow in number every day. But they do not know what I am capable of. Nor, for that matter, do I. Hamilton brings the dark, erotic reign of the immortal fey to a startling new depth. Full ofsensuality and the consuming anticipation of latent powers unleashed, this world of gods, shapeshifters, and immortal souls is unveiled in all of its supreme magnificence and its treacherous deceits.

Jun 19, Bunnycore rated it it was amazing Shelves: Okay so I was bumping between 4. I love the way Merry insists on keeping "her" men safe. Even ones who all but betrayed her. This makes me love her in so many ways. This book wasn't confusing there were some parts that irritated me. The circle talking got on my nerves at points but in the end it was a good book.

It tugged at the heart strings and of course her harem grew more. I am hoping she riddles it down a bit soon. I like reverse Harems but I can't stand when they get to Okay so I was bumping between 4. I like reverse Harems but I can't stand when they get to big to the point of obscene. I know Doyal will stay with Killing Frost that makes me happy. I wonder who her end harem is going to be.

Merry Gentry (series)

I am not a big fan of Nicca's he seems not of the same mindset as the others. Rhy' s is fun, Galen tends to be too sweet. I like how Kitto is gaining confidence. That is something to behold. Minstrel now I just can't wait for his story and I quickly fell in love with Adair. When he needed her she was there. I love how the men looked out for each other. Yes there is jealousies but that to me fae or not that is to be expected. They rally each other when needed tho and that I think is what Merry needs to look strong. Jan 01, Isabelle rated it really liked it Shelves: May 14, Danielle Danniegurl rated it really liked it Shelves: I'm a bit annoyed by this book.

The ending of this one didn't leave me satisfied there are way too many things left to do. A couple are cementing the alliance with a couple of the different groups, through sex of course. Then there is having to go to the feast, ball or what have you for light and illusion. This should have been accomplished in this book as it was part of this plot line, but no sounds like it's going to be its own book which would lead me to believe that there will be problems th I'm a bit annoyed by this book. This one was crazy, but I've noticed quite a few similarities between Anita's books and Merry's it could be because LKH is the author, so I'm sure that's the reason. There is a part where Merry talks about going down on a man, and if any of you have read Anita you know exactly what I mean because she mentions it about Jean Claude quite a bit. I mean it's mentioned enough. Anyways that kind of is annoying because while the characters may have similarities they do have different voices.

Still it's difficult not to compare and expect their tastes to be completely different and that's why I am annoyed by this as well. In the overall story though LKH she likes to rehash for paragraphs upon paragraphs and pages upon pages. She likes to remind us of things that we were reminded of earlier in the book that we don't really need to be reminded of.

I have learned that during these parts we need to skim, or skip. There is far more dialogue in Anita, but in Merry due to the politics there is less, and I'm not a huge fan of internalizing, description and such I want interaction. I want to see where this is going. I thought I was going to take a break after this book, but due to the events not coming through completely I must go onto the next one.

Also I'm soooooo not a fan of view spoiler [ the Aunt make out session really skeeved me out hide spoiler ] Jan 28, Dinjolina added it Shelves: This book bored me. I stopped reading it a month ago and Will go back to it somedaaaaaaaay Somedaaaaaaaaaay I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far Behind me. Aug 19, Laura rated it really liked it. Ok what I love the characters are amazing with so many different sides, also considering there is a fair few the author lets you get to know each and everyone and writes them beautifully, I also have to point out that Merry Gentry and Anita Blake are some of the best female characters I have read, both by this Author. When we do get the magic I love it! What I didn't love The barely there plot, this book is not by any means a quickie but all that happened is, Merry again mirror talks with Goblin king, frets about upcoming visit to the seelie court, has sex and visits her aunt where she and her aunt are both nearly assassinated.

The rest of the book is filled with a lot of ways to try and lie without actually lying and strike deals I was so confused buy the end of what member of the court has taken what bodily fluid from what sidhe and who owes what? Also I don't like how the sex feels mechanical and is later dissected and pulled apart and discussed I will carry on as the parts I liked I loved Like I said, this is a marmite book I keep eating out of pure curiosity too see if i actually like it or not Jun 15, Megan rated it liked it.

I understand the basics. All the characters are moody AF. Also Merry explains every single thing she does in way too much detail. I do find the actual plot interesting, when there is no sex, and it has to do with the Fae's politics. The porn is both boring and squicky for some at least. There are also lots of different humanoid creature sex. Since Merry and the other woman are straight this will not go on the glbt bookshelf.

All Merry's harem are pretty similar and have all the same penis size huge. It's amusing to me. Porn should never get boring. Merry keeps developing more powers for herself, her harem, and a few special people. I keep wondering when Merry will level up and evolve. I think I am developing a fictional character crush. I need to find fanfic. View all 6 comments. Aug 14, Nicole rated it liked it Shelves: Still entertaining, but the series is beginning to suffer from writing that is okay but not great. Hamilton has odd pacing, and perhaps an odd sense of the passage of time as conversations unfold.

She keeps us constantly dialed in for what seems to be about 12 hours of of nearly straight action or sometimes semi-action that you wonder if it's really that important to witness , then suddenly jumps forward, glossing over a few hours that do seem like they might have been important. I also have th Still entertaining, but the series is beginning to suffer from writing that is okay but not great. I also have this lurking feeling that she has consistency issues with the timeline of the backstory. I hope that somewhere, she has a big chart to keep track of it all, but after three books, I don't feel like she does.

The last thing that bothers me is the imbalance growing between the main character, Merry, and everyone else. I can't help but feel there is something wrong and kind of annoying when the literally thousands of years of collective wisdom and life experience of, on average, 7 immortal characters are constantly being bested by just one 30 year old woman.

Girl power is fine by me, but to this extent, it just seems silly.

Maybe Merry is the savior of her people, but I don't much like to think that no one has any value beyond their miliatary prowess anymore. Nov 27, Tina rated it it was ok Shelves: This was a let down from the other two stories in the series. In the two previous books there was actual plot. This one is just a lot of explaining about the laws of the Faerie Kind and then lots of sex but nothing else. I kept turning the pages waiting for forward story movement. And there was nothing. Fine we know the Fey are very open about sex. I don't care about sex. Let everyone have sex! Just also let there be some kind of story that makes it worth my while. Isn't Merry a detective? Why doesn't she solve cases? There was so much good set up in the previous books that this one sadly wastes. Jul 14, Domino aka Meme rated it liked it Shelves: Merry would definitely be better. The first several novels in the Anita Blake series are great. Funny, scary, a touch gory and a touch sexy.

As you read each book, you can really see the character development as Anita becomes more sure of herself and more comfortable with the "monsters".

However, some the later books have deteriorated into little more than soft porn for women. Not that there's anything wrong with that. However, I feel it cheapens the series, which features a great role model in Anita as a women who has accepted The first several novels in the Anita Blake series are great. However, I feel it cheapens the series, which features a great role model in Anita as a women who has accepted that her life works the way it is and makes her happy, even it is not what the rest of the world thinks is normal.

She is strong, independent, and accepting of her sexuality. The chalice appears and boosts the series into overdrive. The power the chalice can give or return to a Sidhe significantly raises the stakes for Merry and is the stat of a long-running subplot in the series.
