Hence, the prophet Joseph Smith translated them into English from the Sabean script and the Mormon Church had them for almost two centuries without knowing the authentic owners of the records. The records were then to be revealed to the African people by one of their descendants, and that is what I am doing now. I have convincingly proven the Book of Mormon to be the record of the African ancestors and is therefore an African Bible.
Sat Aug 22, Gee, Brad, I thought I was being silly for just posting a link to this self-published book, something that could be used as a strong evidence against any assertion that the author is sane. And, oh my god, meanwhile back at the FARMS, they reviewed another self-published book by Melekin in a similar vein—a fifteen page review , no less.
That is strong evidence against their having had any claim to academic respectability. Sat Aug 22, 8: I would just note that Jared Hickman, who I think has some claim to academic respectability, has also engaged Melekin's writing: As recently as , the self-proclaimed Eritrean prophet Embaye Melekin not a member of the LDS Church , authored an exhaustive commentary on The Book of Mormon that, in the wake of DNA's problematization of the Indians-as-Israelites theory, reinterprets the LDS scripture as an account of the migration of a group of Israelites not to the Americas but to the east coast of Africa.
The readerly transformation Melekin undergoes as he plods straight through The Book of Mormon in many ways exemplifies the argument I will offer here. Melekin, initially self-identified as light-skinned and exclusively 'Eritrean,' begins by aligning himself with the white Nephite narrators over and against the black Lamanites—here coded as black sub-Saharan 'Africans.

What's up with this, Nevo? Doesn't the false equivalence game get boring at some point? Did Symmachus actually say that "engaging" with Melekin's writing is strong evidence against a claim to academic respectability? Can you think of some material differences between the way Ash "engaged" with Melekin's writings and the way Hickman "engaged" with them?

Do you think there might be a significant difference between devoting 15 pages to seriously evaluating a claim that the Book of Mormon was really set in Africa and including Melekin as an example, along with several others, of a view that the Book of Mormon narrative is one of empowerment for native peoples? Did you even skim the two articles? I would just note that Jared Hickman, who I think has some claim to academic respectability, has also engaged Melekin's writing:. Sat Aug 22, 3: Sat Aug 22, 4: Mon Aug 24, 2: Mon Aug 24, 4: I like this theory, but its explanatory power falls way short of Darth J's Italian setting of the Book of Mormon theory.
