I feel like the characters and their stories are apart me now. One person found this helpful. Though facts of the previous book were entered, I love the story line of Mary Monroe! Mary Monroe is now truly my favorite author. This book takes over a few years after God Don't Like Ugly leaves off. Annette, off on her own, tries to carve out a life for herself and wrestle the demons from her past. Returning to her hometown, she rekindles past relationships, begins a relationship with her dad who abandoned her long ago, and she and her mom learn that he wasn't entirely a bad guy.
This novel, much like the first one, deals with heavy issues--childhood abuse, parental abandonment, prostitution, obesity, etc. Rarely are people or events entirely good or bad, and maybe we should be less closed-minded and more quick to forgive. Though this book did rehash some of the events from the first one, it also gave nice closure to the story. Like most sequels, I didn't like it quite as well as the first one, but it was still a very good book.
Read God Don't Like Ugly first, and then this one.

Continued with Roda and Annette as adults. I'm not sure but I think this is the last of the God Books and I truly enjoyed the way she kept us caught up with all the previovs drama in the other books. I loved this book, hated that one of the main characters had such a hard time. Annette seems to be getting all that she deserves. Muh Dear seems happy also.

Some of her experiences are horrifying and it was so hard reading through these parts. She was hurting so much and she became so lost.
That's what made this a frustrating read for me because the entire time I just wanted Annette to reach out to someone and let them in. So many great characters in this book though. Rhoda is such an interesting character and even after finishing the book, I don't really know how I feel about her.
Muh Dear reminds me so much of my own mother. Such a variety of characters in this story and the author really makes it work. Not once did I feel a character was too outrageous and I never questioned their place in the story. I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking to really connect with a story. This book will definitely make you FEEL. Can't wait to get a hold on the next books in the series.

Oct 28, Nikki Dobbins rated it liked it. I was angry throughout the book. Not for what happened to the main character even though it was a horrible experience but actually mad at the character. I was mad at Annette because she never spoke out about what happened to her, only to Rhonda. She began to stand up for herself against Mr Boatwright but not enough for her to be more active in trying to stop what was happening. Ina way it was like she liked it and she began to like Mr. They were like companions. When it was to the I was angry throughout the book. When it was to the point that she ended up in the hospital was mu final draw and i almost put the book back on the shelf.
I no longer felt sorry for her. Killing an unborn child, almost killing yourself, having your own mother believe you were promiscuous, and the man that raped you agree that you are promiscuous and yet she stills says nothing was the breaking point for me. Rhonda was a bad ass but a little crazy. The conclusion was wrapped up too fast almost rushed in a sense that it seemed to fit into one chapter of a few pages. I wasn't as satisfied with this book as i had hoped. View all 7 comments. Sep 19, Chevonne rated it it was ok.
I did however even as a teenager when I first read it become annoyed by how elementary some of the writing was. I kept wondering of the author, "Did she not have a thesarus on hand?? I just wanted to scream "Use a different word!! If you can overlook those glaring flaws, the story is actually a good one Jun 21, Brandy rated it liked it. This was one of the many books that made me wish that I could give half stars. It was definitely better than a 3 to me, but not quite a 4. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and then sympathetic and sad at others.
This book touches on every emotion and brings you in for a close look into the African American culture that you might not get unless you were part of it.

I'll read the second book and decide whether to buy the rest. This is the 1st book I read Mary Monroe. This book's story line was really good.
Some parts of this story made me mad. At times in the story I was mad at Annette. At times in the story I didn't understand Annette's action. I was mad at Annette's Muh Dear. I really enjoyed the setting of this story because it gave me insight of how in was in the s.

This story is different from the stories I usually read but I really enjoyed this book. Nov 20, Dalena rated it did not like it. I hated the fact that this book chose to focus on the moral superiority of the main character. Instead of exploring the ways sex abuse, mental illness, racism, and violence affects family and community, this book chose to absolve perpetrators of all responsibility. I think this book is a perfect example of the way toxic people are protected in Black communities and families.
It misses a great opportunity to discuss healthy ways to move past pain. I chose not to read the sequel. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This book tells the story of Annette, a young girl who is often called fat and ugly. Annette moves from Florida to Ohio with her mother after her father runs off with another woman.
Her mother takes in an old boarder with one leg to help cover the bills. Annette's life forever changes after Mr. Boatwright begins to molest Annette, after awhile he begins to rape her, and even gets her pregnant. The disturbing part starts to use the rape to get things out of Mr.

Boatwright This book tells the story of Annette, a young girl who is often called fat and ugly. Annette has a beautiful friend named Rhoda that encourages Annette to kill Mr. This was a well written book. The only thing I didn't like was Annette using the rape to get money and other things from Mr.

Also her mother was not very observant and believed everything Mr. Boatwright had to say. Jan 14, Shannon rated it did not like it. The author repeated herself, made goofs in the storyline, created characters with no depth or real emotion, and she is in dire need of a thesaurus. I don't think I will ever be able to hear the work "incredulous" again without thinking of this book. In addition, as someone who listened to the audio book I was tremendously disappointed with the performer I guess that's what they are called who stumbled on words and made no attempt to hide her swall This book was SLOOOOOW and unnecessarily long.
In addition, as someone who listened to the audio book I was tremendously disappointed with the performer I guess that's what they are called who stumbled on words and made no attempt to hide her swallowing and smoking sounds as she spoke. It was often gross to hear. Aug 25, Nike rated it really liked it. I am always astounded by the licence and shame that comes with abuse! I am on page of this book, and I find that even though its fiction it just resonates too much with stuff I read about in the papers! Annette needs to have someone who really sees her and likes her to make her feel good about herself and to know that she does not have to ut up with this?!
